What Do Dolphins Eat in Minecraft? Feed, Treasure & Speed
Minecraft Dolphins is a sea-based neutral mob in the game living in non-frozen oceans and give a speed boost to players that swim in the water near them.
They are added to the game since version 1.13.
Dolphins are also believed to be one of the most favorite animals in Minecraft and sometimes lead you to hidden treasure often scattered throughout the water area when you feed them raw fish.

What do Minecraft Dolphins Eat?
Dolphins in Minecraft eat Raw Cod and Raw Salmon found in their ocean biome. Feeding the dolphins gains their “trust” and being friends with them leads you to the nearest shipwreck, buried treasure.

Cod are Found underwater down to level 32.
To catch one, you will need to fish in the traditional ways.
Locate a large water body, from your hot bar, and select a fishing rod or enchanted fishing rod.
Next Cast your Fishing Line and Wait for the Fish to Bite. Once the bubbles start to form out of the water, wait till the bubbles get closer to your fishing line, and reel back in your fishing line very fast.
If you are lucky and fast enough, you will catch a cod for your dolphin and they are added to your inventory.
Catching cod will award you 1-6 experiences.
Cod will Spawn in cold, frozen, lukewarm, and normal ocean biomes. They usually are in groups of 4-7 and have a tannish color.
They spawn in the same biomes as Salmon as well.

Salmon are found between levels 5-32. They are a food source for both players and dolphins in the game.
Similar to Cod, they are caught by fishing.
Alternatively, you can also buy both Raw and Cooked Salmon from the nearby Fisherman Villagers.
Salmo spawns in groups of 3-5. Their colors are red and green, slightly longer than Cod.
Raw salmon is a useful item apart from feeding dolphins, they are also a food item in Minecraft for players, tame cats, and heal tame wolves.
They should always be kept in your inventory if possible to be used later.

How to Find Cod & Salmon in Minecraft?
Cod and Salmon can only be found in Ocean biomes. Listed below are all the biomes they both spawn in.

- Deep Cold Ocean
- Deep Frozen Ocean
- Frozen River
- River
Both Raw Cod and Salmon are small fish. So, you will need to look more in-depth and carefully in the shallow parts of the ocean.
How To Feed A Dolphin In Minecraft?
To feed a dolphin, equip a raw cod or salmon in your inventory and drop it near the water’s edge or in the middle of the water body itself.
Dolphins will suffocate on land. So, It is not advisable to feed the dolphins on land or anywhere outside the water.
Benefits of Feeding Dophins in Game
A dolphin will give 1-3 XP and 0-1 raw cod when they are killed.
Locate Treasure
Your fed dolphins can lead you to hidden treasures acting as a Sea Fortune enchantment.
After feeding the dolphin, the player will see a change in the animal’s behavior. The dolphin will swim slowly to the location of the buried treasure.
They will continue to swim and locate chest after one another.
Boost Speed
You will also get the “Dolphin’s Grace” status effect to swim faster alongside them making it a great way to travel through water rather alone or boat.
As mentioned above, they are neutral mobs but they will follow the player and extend the speed buff for the player.
By the way, when you kill your dolphin, it will drop a raw cod or salmon (whichever you feed)
So, Just in case, you need extra Cod or Salmon, killing a dolphin will make it work. So, make sure to wait for it and pick up any dropped items before they disappear from your inventory.
I know it doesn’t seem the most humane thing to do, but hey it technically gives you what you need.
