How to Get Rid of Water in Minecraft: 7 Methods Guide

Water is an essential part of life and applies the same to your Minecraft World – It can be used for farming crops, brewing potions, getting obsidian, or designing a beautiful lake outside your house.

However, as useful as water is, sometimes it can become a hindrance where you may need to get rid of water.

For instance, if you have a HUGE area squared off, with several large masses of water. What would be the best way to get rid of water?

To remove water in Minecraft: Use a Sponge and Split up water bodies into small sections. Put a sponge in the Center of each water section to absorb the water and the water will disappear leaving the area dry. A single sponge can absorb water within a 7-block radius of itself.

How to Get Rid of Water in Minecraft

There are a few ways to remove Minecraft water.

Method 1: Shut Off the Water Source with Blocks

Minecraft Water bodies usually have a source.

So, find the source of water and place a solid block to contain it and stop spreading.

Otherwise, your work will be a constant one step behind.

Place a block to the water source.

  • Locate the water source
  • Place something on top of the source block
  • You can also place a block in front of its hole.
  • All the water will slowly stop spreading and disappear.

However, if you are trying to get rid of a stagnant water body such as a pool, place blocks in every available square of the pool.

Method 2: Use a Sponge (Recommended with water bodies like rivers)

A sponge block can be used to remove water from Ocean Monument and sponges are found in sponge rooms that are empty of water and includes a wet Sponge with the ceiling and walls.

Tip: Put up walls in between water bodies to split up the water into small sections.

Next, place a sponge in the center of each water section to absorb the water.

Here’s how to use Sponge:

  • Get a dry sponge
  • Split up water bodies in small sections
  • Put the sponge in the water
  • The water will disappear leaving a dry area.

Once a sponge is used, it becomes wet and a wet sponge cannot be used to absorb any more water if it’s at full capacity.

To dry a sponge – Smelting by putting them with a flammable item in a furnace will give you back a dry sponge.

A single sponge can absorb water within a 7-block radius from itself and turn into a wet sponge.

Method 3: Use sand or gravel

If you want to get rid of deep water bodies, the above methods are quite time-consuming.

For this method, you will need solid ground underwater as sand and gravel will only fall to the land on a solid block.

You just need to fill up with either sand or gravel until the column is full of it.

  • Collect huge amounts of sand
  • Stand beside the water
  • Drop sand blocks all the way down to the bottom
  • Continue until the column is full of it.
  • Once the column is filled with sand blocks
  • Step onto it and repeat the process.

It can be a slow process, but it is a much better alternative than manually searching for blocks.

Method 4: Use Bucket

To fill an empty bucket with water, right-click on the water body while holding the bucket in your hand.

Using the bucket on the water source will dry up the water body because nothing will replenish it. However, If it isn’t, the block you removed will refill from the source.

Note: Flowing water does not fill a bucket.

To craft a Bucket:

  • Open the Crafting Menu
  • Open the 3×3 crafting grid
  • Add Materials to make a Bucket – Place 3 iron ingots in the 3×3 crafting grid.

First row: 1 iron ingot in the first box and 1 iron ingot in the third box.
Second row: 1 iron ingot in the middlebox.

A bucket will appear in the box to the right.

Move the Bucket to your Inventory

Once you have crafted the buckets, drop the item into your inventory.

Method 5: Burn Down the Water

That’s quite a funny statement but what’s funny when all hope is lost?

If none of the methods works intrigues you, why not just burn down the water?

  • Fill up the water body with flammable material, such as leaves, wool, or wood.
  • Use a lighter or flint and steel to light
  • This will burn down all the material along with the water.

Method 6: Using Lava

Lava is a liquid-ish block in Minecraft that can flow like water and when it touches a water block, it turns it into stone.

If the lava comes in contact with a water body, then the water source becomes obsidian.

Not the most common nor practical but hey technically it works!

Method 7: Manually Remove the Water

Similar to the sponge method, create small compartments.

  • Create a small wall and border to create compartments
  • Put blocks inside the compartment until there is no water left.
  • Break the blocks.
  • Voila! The water bodies will disappear.

in summary, fill it up and break it.

Use the Minecraft command to Drain Mass Water

If you are trying to clear a big water area, the above methods might not be quite practical.

Players can use Minecraft commands to remove huge amounts of water.

You need to use the ‘/fill’ command which allows you to replace blocks or fill the areas with any blocks of your choice.

You need two sets of coordinates (X, Y, and Z).

The first coordinate is from which water needs to be removed. Diagonally locate the opposite corner and note down the coordinates.

  • BedRock Edition: Type “/fill air 0 replace water” in the chat window.
  • Java Edition: Type “/fill air replace water.”

That is all you need to remove water blocks from Minecraft. There are multiple methods to do so, choose the one which seems the best suited for your needs.
