In Minecraft, Horses can be healed by feeding them certain food items such as Wheat, Hay bales, Sugar, Apples, Carrots, Golden apples, and Golden carrots. Unlike other passive mobs, Horses will naturally regenerate their health over time if they are not injured again.

Can you heal a horse in Minecraft?
Yes, you can heal a Horse in Minecraft by feeding a golden apple, a golden carrot, or a hay bale by right-clicking on the horse while holding the food item. This will restore the horse’s health.
Note that if a horse’s health is too low, it may collapse and die on the ground eventually despawning and disappearing out of your World.
So, it’s necessary to keep an eye on the horse’s health and heal it promptly if it is injured or hurt.
What Do Horses Eat in Minecraft
In Minecraft, horses can be fed various types of food items to increase their health points and keep them healthy. Here are some of the food items that horses can eat:
- Wheat – restore 2 health points.
- Hay bales – restore 20 hunger points, which is equivalent to 1 health point.
- Sugar – restores 1 health point.
- Apples – restore 3 health points.
- Carrots – restore 3 health points.
- Golden apples – restore 10 health points along with a temporary increase in the horse’s maximum health by 10.
- Golden carrots – restore 6 health points with a temporary increase in the horse’s maximum health by 6.
Note that certain food items are harmful to the horses such as poisonous potatoes, Dried kelp, Rotten flesh, and Spider eye.
These items are far better off being used as potion ingredients or crafting items rather than eaten by you let alone your horse.
How to Heal a Horse in Minecraft
To heal a Horse in Minecraft, you must feed them Sugar, Wheat, Apples, Golden Carrots, Golden Apple, and Hay Bale.
Step 1: Go to your Sick Horse
Firstly, go near your horse that needs to be healed.
Step 2: Feed the Horse to increase health Points
Next, select a food item such as apples, carrots, and hay bales from your hot bar.
Use the Game control to feed a horse in Minecraft depending on your device:
Here are the game controls to feed a horse in Minecraft on different devices:
For PC/ Mac:
- To Open your Minecraft, Press the “E” button.
- Select the food item from your inventory.
- Right-click on the horse with the food item selected in your hand to feed it.
For Xbox:
- Press Xbox Y Button on the controller to open the inventory
- Select the food item
- Press and hold the LT button to feed the horse with the food item selected in your hand.
For PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5:
- Open inventory via the Triangle icon on the controller
- Choose the food item to feed the hurt horse
- Press and hold the R2 button to feed the horse with the food item selected in your hand.
For Nintendo Switch:
- To open inventory, click on the “-” button
- Use the joystick to select the food item you want to use.
- Press and hold the “ZL” button to feed the horse with the food item selected in your hand.
Once you have fed the horse, the health points will increase and the selected food item will disappear from your hot bar. Keep an eye out for the horse and feed them to keep them healthy.
Skeleton horse which is basically the Undead variant of the regular horse can also be healed using the same method as you might heal a regular horse.
They are spawned during thunderstorms and have a unique and spooky appearance. Other benefits include – more durability, immunity, and Unique looks.
How to Heal Skeleton Horse
To heal a Skeleton Horse, feed the skeleton horse the same food items that you would feed a regular horse, such as Wheat, Apples, golden apples, golden carrots, carrots, wheat, and hay bales. Each of these food items restores a different amount of health to the Skeleton horse.
It is also important to keep the skeleton horse in a safe location until they are fully healed as they have the same vulnerability to danger and enemy attack as regular horses.
Can you Heal Horses in Minecraft With Splash Potion of Healing
No, unlike the healing of other mobs, Splash Potion of Healing cannot be used to heal horses.
When you use the Potion of healing 1 on other mobs – it restores 4 health points (2 hearts) and Potion of Healing II restores 8 health points (4 hearts).
However, Sadly it doesn’t work on horses.
It’s important to take steps to protect pets and prevent them from getting lost or hurt, such as keeping them in a fenced area or using a lead to keep them nearby while exploring.
